Bangalore Mirror, Times of India Newspaper

Bangalore Mirror Newspaper took out a series of articles on Krav Maga Israeli Military Self Defense tactics showcased by Specialist Franklin Joseph, CEO of Indian Institute of Strategic Threat-Intelligence Analysis & Combat Tactical Science, Dharwad.

The newspaper article’s main goal was to illustrate the simple scientific elements of Krav Maga Self Defense training, which even a little schoolgirl could master. Guruji Franklin Joseph was the pretending opponent, a man who was at least three or four times larger, stronger, and older than his student, schoolgirl in the picture. It also showcases women self defense against a bigger stronger opponent.

A woman should be able to pursue her goals without any obstacles in her way. She needs more than just courage, though, to thrive in a world dominated by men. Thus was created Krav Maga, a form of military self-defense for the Israel Defense Forces. Combining techniques from many martial arts, its emphasis is on technique and agility rather than power. In order to teach you self-defense techniques, we spoke with an expert for this series.

People stuff knives or pepper spray inside the bags they carry. It is more convenient to carry an umbrella or a key in your hands for quick and efficient use as “weapons.”

A hand grab is frequently the first action taken in a criminal incident. It is imperative that you take control of the situation at that moment. You too can be saved if this young girl can save herself.

Fist of Fury – Part 1

Step 1 : When he grabs you by your neck Krav Maga expert Franklin Joseph shows you how to counter the attack. Begin with stabilising yourself after the initial push and get a grip of his hand that’s throttling you.

Step 2 : Raise the same hand as the attackers in a way that your biceps touch the ears. Your forearm will be parallel to the ground.

Step 3 : Now, leading with your raised arm, rotate towards the attacker’s hand. This way, you use your core strength — muscles of the stomach, back, thigh — against the strength of his arm.

Step 4 : Under your pressure, he is forced to bend, which loosens his grip on your neck. It also inflicts enough pain to immobilise him for a few seconds, giving you time to run, or call for help.

The Key : Franklin Joseph says any tool is effective only when the person holding it, knows the right time to use it. In the picture, he shows how even a key can be potential killer if a person crosses the line. He also vouches for the humble umbrella as the person carrying it can look menacing too.

The Umbrella : Extend the umbrella towards the soft target of the throat if you see him approaching towards you with a threat. It has to be quick and sharp with the twist in your body to add energy.

If you want to hit the person, make sure you are making an imaginary 8 or X while hitting the attacker with your umbrella. The unpredictability makes it difficult for him to catch your hands.

If the opponent is already close, then use the umbrella as a baton, holding it with the hands on each end of the umbrella. Thrust the middle portion into the attacker’s throat.

Take matters into your own hands

Step 1 : Lift the wrist while making a tight fist. This will send a message to the attacker that you are not someone who is going to surrender that easy.

Step 2 : Grab your own wrist with your other hand, thus, making a triangle to help stabilise your upper body.

Step 3 : Use your lower body strength — twist, lift and move the leg 90 degrees towards the attacker’s thumb while keeping the triangle intact. This way your bigger muscles — thighs, back and stomach — generate enough power to open his grasp.

Step 4 : After release, bring your palm facing the attacker covering your upper torso in order to prepare yourself to defend against further attacks. Scan your surroundings and escape ASAP.
